Digital Engineering Ecosystem for AeroDef Mission Engineering

Overview

As aerospace and defense missions grow increasingly complex, organizations require more effective methods for evaluation, optimization, and design. Mission Engineering has emerged as an analytical, data-driven approach to decompose and analyze the constituent parts of a mission, enabling the identification of measurable trade-offs and providing decision support. For contractors and suppliers, it is becoming critical to explore optimization opportunities, showcase their solutions, and conduct refinement and validation activities within a broader mission context.

This approach requires digital continuity across disciplines and levels of abstraction to manage increasing data complexity and foster collaboration among teams and organizations. MathWorks tool ecosystem supports Mission Engineering by enabling the creation of a unified digital environment for modeling and collaboration. This allows analysis and design work to proceed at the fidelity level appropriate to the problems being solved. The ability to operate at different levels of abstraction within a single environment promotes faster and more cost-effective system delivery.

Highlights

  • Discuss the motivations and challenges of Mission Engineering in the defense industry
  • Walk through MathWorks approach to Mission Engineering and its tooling requirements
  • Explore MathWorks capabilities and solutions that accelerate the readiness of requirements, models, and testing environments—ultimately leading to better mission outcomes
  • Highlight interoperability capabilities needed to support a collaborative full mission engineering ecosystem, including integration with SysML v2

About the Presenter

Kirsten McCane
Kirsten is an Industry Manager at MathWorks in Washington D.C. He works with defense industry customers on strategies and solutions to accelerate the realization of their digital transformation objectives such as digital engineering, DevOps, and MOSA.

Kirsten graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Computer Engineering in 2007 and M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2009.  He joined Northrop Grumman Mission Systems upon graduation where he worked for 12 years on solutions for Multi-function Sensor Systems.  While at Northrop Grumman, he received his MBA from the University of Maryland in 2017.

Leif Hille
Leif is an Aerospace & Defense Industry Manager at Mathworks.  Leif is focused on supporting the company's AeroSpace and Defense customers in radar and communications systems as well as electronic warfare topics. Prior to joining MathWorks in 2022, Leif spent 18 years at Raytheon Technologies developing, integrating and testing air, missile and maritime defense radars for US and foreign military customers.   He is also a former U.S. Navy submarine officer and worked for NATO in submarine operations planning.

Leif has a B.S. in electrical engineering from Yale University and an MBA from Babson's Olin College.  He is currently pursuing a MS in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology. Leif is a bilingual French and English speaker and has a basic ability in Portuguese.
