Symbolic Math, 30 Years After FLOP

By Cleve Moler, MathWorks

Maple® software for symbolic mathematical computation was integrated with MATLAB® in 1993.

In this article from that year, Cleve Moler recalls his earliest foray into symbolic mathematical computation with a system dubbed Fortran List Oriented Package (FLOP) and explains how Maple capabilities were made available in Symbolic Math Toolbox®.

Today, Symbolic Math Toolbox is no longer based on Maple, but instead uses MuPAD as the symbolic engine.
