I have a project to create an intelligent robot using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Education Base Set. It is a search and rescue robot that will recognize a heat source and move around obstacles to obtain that object. I am planning to make it use a regular camera (nxtcam-v3) for shape recognition and surveillance (path planning). This will allow the robot to make its own path around the obstacles, identify the shape of the object and pick it up. Along with that, I want to allow the robot to detect a thermal source via a thermal camera. Will Matlab and Simulink be able to handle this type of project. Will they be suitable in order to program the Lego robot to create an intelligent system with 2 cameras?

I think they should. Try it and find out. If you get something good, and general purpose enough, post it to the File Exchange.
