how can i convert a text into matrix?

plz I want to change the gray scale values of letters in a text.should I cnvert the text to an image or to a matrix?and how this is done?

I don't know why but there has been an enormous increase in the number of people wanting to to OCR lately. Anyway, see this link, which does exactly that: http://www.mathworks.com/help/vision/ref/ocr.html#bt548t1-2_1
