Matlab and arduino serial communication

Hello,

I am trying to set a handshaking communication between Matlab and arduino. In this case, I want to be able to check for availability of data coming from arduino at anytime and if no data received check for availability again till it receives something. In the other words there is any way to prevent Matlab from generating timeout error while there is no data?
