Is there a better way to access certain parts of an excel file using "xlsread" and strings?

I have written code to read specific columns in an excel file. This code works, but i am wondering if there is a way to do it with fewer lines of code.

There are File Exchange contributions to simplify creating Excel ranges from row and column numbers.
