Dear Stephan, thanks. Updating the 2108 release is OK: symbolic tool (now release 8.1) works. ver indicates Update 4. But my question was concerned with release 2017b: ver shows MATLAB Version: 9.3.0.713579 (R2017b) and does not indicate any Update. The symbolic tool of this release does not work. Just for completeness how to update it, since the bug report claims that update 7 fixes the bug? Thanks E. Canuto

As far as i know the bug is also known to be in 2017b.

Try

ver

in 2017b and Check if you are on update 7. If not try to update from matlab directly:

HOME-TAB / Add-Ons (little arrow) / Check for Updates / Products

Dear Stephan, I have already tried, but it shows that all the product items are updated, including the Symbolic Math Tool, which however shows the version 8.0 lower than the 2108a which is 8.1. I will shift to 2018a. Thanks E. Canuto

This sounds like a case for a service request. I only could suggest to reinstall and try again. If this doesnt work you should let know TMW.
