Estimate wavelet spectra from 2D wavelet packet decomposition?

I would like to decompose a 2D field using a wavelet packet decompostion (wpdec2) and use the detail coefficients within that nodal tree structure to calculate a wavelet spectrum for subregions of that 2D field. Is there a way to extend the wpspectrum function to two dimensions, or does anyone have insights on how to accomplish this?
