Optimization of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Design and Control through Simulation
Optimization is critical for achieving the performance and economy expected of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Electric Vehicles. With a wide range of design choices and high cost of battery hardware, the sizing and design characteristics of the battery pack for electrified vehicles need to be determined systematically and quickly. Optimization of vehicle control and battery design parameters need to be done in parallel to achieve realistic results, since interactions between controls and hardware design have a direct impact on vehicle performance. The traditional practice of experimenting with a couple of parameters at a time using prototype vehicles can be time-consuming and may lead to unnecessary increase in the cost of the vehicle.
In this webinar, we will demonstrate a simulation-led systematic design approach that integrates optimization and parallel computing methods with the system level simulation model of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Independent variables for vehicle control and battery design are tuned by the numerical optimizer to maximize the net present value over real-world drive cycles.

He closely interacts with customers in different domains to help them use MathWorks products for Physical Modeling and Control Design. Vijayalayan regularly attends and speaks at industry conferences, and has presented and published research papers on Modeling and Simulation in national and international conferences. Vijayalayan holds a Masters Degree in Control Guidance and Instrumentation from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
