matlab hangs when help window is opened

I have MATLAB R2014a 64-bit mac. Whenever I try to open the help window (either by clicking on Help in any of the toolbars or by typing doc "function", MATLAB hangs. I have to then force quit the application and restart it.
Are there any reasons why this might happen and are there any ways to resolve this problem?

This is a bug report for this and a workaround.
