Reconstruction of torn images

I have a assignment torn paper scanned in a single image. I want to add the torn pieces automatically by edge detecting,extracting each pieces from the scanned image, matching their boundary and joining. (Example file included.)

I tried region growing and split & merge functions but unable to implement it. So please help me asap.
