Matlab crashes when I use symbolic toolbox

Hello, If I type syms x into MATLAB console then MATLAB crashes. Everything else works fine. But as soon as I type syms x or syms x+y or anything using syms MATLAB crashes. Any idea on why this is happening? I am running this on Ubuntu 12.04 and MATLAB 2012a version. I was running on a previous Ubuntu installation and had no problems with syms but now have reinstalled Ubuntu and now am having this problem. Thanks
