Extracting coordinates from an image

Hi,

I havent used the image processing in matlab before. I have attached an image, and I want to find the coordinates of the points marked by circles o. It seems the general strategy is to convert the image into a binary image and then extract white or black regions. Is there a general straightforward way to do this or an alternative to get the coordinates?
