How to find maximum of a fitness function?

function f = fitnessfuncSingObj(h)
[x, fval, exitflag, output, population, scores] = ga(@fitnessfuncSingObj,18,A,b,[],[],LB,UB,[],IntCon,options)
It was suggested in other similar questions to use a negative of a function to find maximum. I tried with f = -fitnessfuncSingObj(h) and got error with GA unable to continue.
Can someone help me with this?
