Visualize 3D matrix structure as a wireframe rubik's cube??

I want to visualize certain choices of addresses within a 3-dimensional matrix. I have a 1440x181x180 matrix and I would like to first off plot it like a wireframe rubik's cube or a 3D-sudoku, where the structure of cells in the matrix are visible but colorless.
Then I want to, based on a list with cell addresses I have, fil in the corresponding cells with color, perhaps red with alpha 0.5 or something.
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this done in Matlab before but it should be possible right? Does anyone know how to do this and can help me?
When I searched for it I came across this thread which pretty much does what I want but in 2D: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/5709-matrix-visualisation-with-coloured-box-and-numbers
But I cant quite figure out how to do the same thing in 3D.
Thanks.
