trouble using tmtool to connect to an old impedance analyzer (HP 4194A)

Hello everyone!
Long story short, I'm trying to use the tmtool to connect to an HP 4194A to pull some impedance measurements from a sample. A GPIB cables comes from the analyzer, to a USB adapter, to a USB port in my computer. Eventually I'd love to be able to also send commands, but one step at a time. I've done a similar thing before with LabView connected to an oscilloscope and waveform generator, but I need to use matlab to be able to integrate this with other stuff better. I think I've downloaded the relevant drivers (mainly ones from a file called Keysight_instrument_control_bundle_6.2015), but cannot seem to find the drivers from HP themselves (I emailed them a few days ago, but with no response yet).
Current state: In the tmtool, when I scan I do find the GPIB board, but no instruments attached to it. During scanning, the impedance analyzer does shift to remote control mode (an LED on the front of it indicates that), so I know some kind of information is reaching it. If I made an instrument object to that board, it just fails to read (by timing out) or fails to send anything.
My guess: I'm thinking it's some kind of address issue that I'm not sure how I would resolve or I am unable to find the right driver. I have a bad feeling that the adapter may cause more issues than I think, as I know literally nothing about GPIB (as a 20-something year old, I'm pretty sure I didn't know what a computer was when these were relevant). I don't know a whole lot about drivers involving communicating with other hardware, as most of my coding experience involving inputting data is either with very easily installed ones (that install when you plug the device in) or just files on the computer.
Thanks a bunch for any help.
