How do I find the area of a binary image?

Hi, I need to find the area of this image (around the outer edge). Anyone got an idea? Thanks!!!!!

To find the actual boundary, invert, fill, and sum

binaryImage = imfill(~binaryImage, 'holes');
numPixels = sum(binaryImage(:));

If you want a smooth boundary, you need to use activecontour(), like in my attached demo.
