Does Matlab R2014a need Java to run on a Macbook Pro?

I installed Matlab on MacBook Pro successfully. But it is unable to open and shows me a list of Java related programs!Does this mean the two work together and I also have to install Java?

Could you post the Mac OSx version you are using as there was a bug regarding the use of MATLAB R2014a on the Yosemite Mac OSx, and later versions of Mac. The following bug report has the steps that may help in that case:

Not actually a bug: R2014a pre-dates those OS-X versions and those versions turned out to be incompatible in a way that Mathworks was able to patch around.
My OS version is OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
To use R2014a with El Capitan you need to use the fix that Shruti Shivaramakrishnan linked to.
