labelling figures

Say that I have 3 subplots and I want to label the first subplot as (a) the second as (b) and the third as (c). I want the label to be in the NorthWest corner. Is this possible without using the text command and having to manually insert the text yourself.

Why don't you want to use the text command?

I have a rather large dataset which I will be generating a few figures where the axis will vary, therefore I will have to manually change the values defining the location of the text. So, I was hoping for a command that would do this!

You can easily automate the location of the text by using the get function to find out the x- and y- limits of the axes, and then using this information to specify the location and extent of the text.
Alternatively, you can change the units of measure that are used to locate the text to normalized, and then specify the location in the upper right corner.
