How to do segmentation in thermal images of plants

I am working in plant image analysis. In thermal imaging, it is difficult to segment the plants because the background temperature is not constant. The plants pixels sometimes completely get merged with the background.Is there any algorithm to separate the plants images irrespective of the changing background temperature.
