Detach periodic and non-periodic part sof a signal

  1. Hello to all.I have a signal that contains both periodic and non-periodic parts, in the same temporal slice. How can i detach these two parts in two differents signals?To clarify, the signal that i see incorporates both parts throughout all the spectrum. Thanks.

What knowledge do you have about the periodic part? It is a single frequency, or a superposition of frequencies in some narrowband? If yes to either, you can implement a bandpass filter.
Of course if your nonperiodic component is a broadband, then yes, it will contribute energy throughout the spectrum, but by bandpass filtering you can greatly improve the signal to noise ratio.

Thanks for your reply. I don´t have any knowledge about any of the parts. I collect a signal that comes from a webcam that is pointed to a lab door. If the door is closed and no movements the signal that i receive is periodic. This signal has no importance to my analysis. When the door is opened the signal that i receive has two components, the periodic one and a non-periodic resulting from the door 's movements. So, i want to detach these two components to study them separately. One of my Prof. said maybe i can use the Fisher’s Kappa test but i don´t know if it is a good strategy or how can i use it in matlab. Hope you can understand my doubts. Thanks again. Tiago.
