Shadow Removal for Multispectral TIFF Image

I have 16-band multispectral TIFF image for which I am wanting to detect and remove the shadow. Each band is a different wavelength of course and will be used to calculate spectral indices. I have found some code related to removing shadow for a grayscale image but have been unable to modify it to work with my multispectral image. Essentially, the code should take an average of the pixels around the shadow and "lighten" the shadow by adjusting the pixel value.

Would anyone be able to link me to code on how to do this or, at least, describe in a fair amount of detail how this could be done so that I can write my own code?
