Tracking line in image

Hello,

I would like to track a fat meandering line in an image, create a line in the middle to trace said fat line, then take points along the center line, with a certain distance apart. I have an example image. One thing to note, the lines that will be actually tested will have rounded edges instead of the squared ones in the image. I assume i could use edge detection to find the fat line but
