About the difference between Normal Mode and External Mode of Simulink Desktop Real-Time.

I am currently studying Simulink Desktop Real-Time. Specifically, I am learning according to the example shown by MathWorks. (Reference: https://jp.mathworks.com/help/sldrt/getting-started-with-real-time-windows-target.html) Here is the question. What is the difference between Normal Mode and External Mode used in Simulink Desktop Real-Time? It may be quite fundamental, but it would be helpful if you let me know. I would also appreciate if you could tell me if there are any other sites that should be referenced.
