Why are you defining everything as symbolic? Why aren't you storing any output? Why are you overwriting your inputs with the syms function? The code below is one of the possible ways to answer these questions.

The usual purpose of a GUI is to replace all other user interactions. So you need to replace functions like input with get. As long as the output from either is the same (a char vector) you can use them interchangeably.

So your task now is to first find a way where your code works if you use input, and then replace that with get(handles.edit3,'string').

Use the debugger. What is the exact content of the variable after you use get? Does that match what you would have if you use input?
