Training Function Backpropagation Algorithm

There are a several training function in BPNN. I still confuse where we get the training function in backpropagation algorithm? Because in journal or paper i can't see where the training function algorithm are. Please help me to understand. I have been code backpropagation without NN tools. The result is worse than using NN tools with trainingdx. Thankyou
