is this possible to calculate depth from stereo images? if yes what are the steps? please help me..

i am working in a project "Blind Assistance System". i need to check the surface plane or not through image analysis. it's head wearing system so size should be too small. So no scanner such type assistance is possible. through disparity analysis is this possible? anybody knows about this please help me...
