ActiveX VT_ERROR parameter when reading excel data from matlab. Workarounds?

When reading excel data from Matlab obtain the "ActiveX VT_ERROR" parameter. Is there an alternate method of reading the cell such that the cell's formula is evaluated and Matlab reads a number?

The cell's formula uses the "VLOOKUP" function which also uses the "INDIRECT" function to reference a second external worksheet. It is the "INDIRECT" reference to this external worksheet reference which prevents returning a number value via Matlab.

Issue occurs with xlsread and the ActiveX approach.
