how to insert pointers/markers

Hi there. I am new to matlab and to matlab community. I am working on signal processing for a homework i have. My question is this. Imagine that we have a seismogram plotted. X-axis is time, Y-axis is counts. I want in my plot to add some pointers/lines/markers/whatever. For example : if time = 300 seconds (for example) i want in that spot to add something and to be visible. Then in the same plot and without erasing the previous mark i want to add many more for different time values. If that is possible, i want also to name those marks (above them or i don't know where else). Thanks in advance! I really need your help!
