Connect to remote shared matlab session from python/C++

Is it possible to use the matlab::engine to connect to a remote shared session on another machine, or a VM running on the same machine?

My understand is that python doesn't connect to a matlab session. Instead, python is calling functions/sevices from matlab runtime.
