How can I use matlab land masks to check whether a position is over land or ocean?

I have a set of latitude and longitude positions. I need to divide these point up so that I have one set over the ocean and one set over the land. Any ideas how I can use Matlab to do this. I have thought about using the land masks used in the mapping toolbox but I'm not sure how to go about implementing this?

With the landmask function, get a logical array the same size as your lat and lon arrays like this:

land = landmask(lat,lon);
