Bachmann Develops Control Algorithms with Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation and Testing on Real-Time PLCs

Christoph Schwärzler, Bachmann electronic GmbH

To address growing complexity and avoid risk and timing issues with tests on the final equipment, Bachmann develops control algorithms for machines using hardware-in-the-loop simulation and testing on a real-time PLC platform. This approach is demonstrated with a motor-generator system that simulates the electrical power supply in an electrical network. The simulation is coupled with a PLC system, and the controller is developed in Simulink® with Model-Based Design. The PLC code is automatically generated from the Simulink model.

The coupling of Simulink and Bachmann’s M1 automation system enables developers to perform diagnostics on the real-time application using External mode in Simulink; they can observe in real time what is happening on the controller. Controller parameters can be tuned in Simulink during operation, and tests and optimization of the controller can take place in connection with the final PLC hardware.
