Why do I receive the error "Exception in thread "main" com.google.inject.ProvisionException" when installing MATLAB on Linux or Mac?

When installing MATLAB 7.11 (R2010b) on Linux, I receive the following error:
ERROR: Exception in thread "main" com.google.inject.ProvisionException: Guice provision errors:
1) Error in custom provider, java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
at com.mathworks.wizard.WizardModule.provideDisplayProperties(WizardModule.java:59)
while locating com.mathworks.instutil.DisplayProperties
...
...
I would like to resolve this so I can install.

This error occurs if the symbolic links for the installer are missing. The installer uses symbolic links in order to locate the required libraries for installation. This may occur if the installer .zip archive was extracted on a file system that does not support symbolic links. For example, if the files were extracted on a Windows system, this error would occur. To resolve this, the installer should be extracted on a system that supports symbolic links (ext2, ext3, etc.).
This error can also occur when installing from DVD if the DVD is not mounted with the correct permission set. To correct this, please see the related article:
Why do I get the message "xsetup: Permission denied" when running the installer on Linux/Unix?
