Find average nearest neighbor

N points have been distributed in a rectangle of the dimensions a & b. The rectangle is periodically repeated along the x-axis (so we have infinite number of rectangles in the x-axis with the same pattern of points). I want to find the average distance of nearest neighbors. How can I do that?
