How can I configure the caret "^" on matlab 2013a?

My operative system is linux (with debian), it is configure in English, but its keyboard is in Spanish and matlab in English too.

The Spanish keyboard is the part that MATLAB is having difficulty dealing with. I do not know how to configure appropriately in Linux. I get the same issue
