Validate matlab code to be syntactically correct

Hi everyone,
I am working on an application in Java which analyzes matlab code.
The first thing I want to accomplish is validating a matlab code file for being syntactically correct.
I have considered trying to compile the code in matlab to C code to see if that works without error, but is there are more elegant way maybe?

Some people use depfun() for this purpose. Others use mlint, but I see a note there that now checkcode is recommended.
