Common variables between functions (callbacks)

Hello to all of you,
I am programming a GUI in which I start a measurement (Start button) and I want to end int with the help of a Stop button. I can do that by using global variables, but the main drawback is that the routine is not very responsive.
What other means are there in order to perform this operation?
