The BESSEL function is now deprecated (as of R2010b) and generates an error, as it has been replaced with BESSELJ.
In which MATLAB release was BESSELJ introduced?
(And is there an easy way to find out in which release any particular function was introduced?)

The besselj function was introduced no later than R13SP2, which is the oldest documentation release archived on Mathwork's site.
