Address blocks in sliding windows?

    I'm trying to use a sliding window in nlfilter (or colfilter, or blockproc)  to replace  pixels, in the m-by-n block x. nlfilter calls, with black pixels if var(block)>=500.
    But I don't know how to address these blocks, and hence what function to use.
    Can you suggest anything?
