Why is laplace not working?

Whenever I try to run the laplace functoin it errors. This is an example problem I copied directly from the mathworks website and the result. What is going wrong?

EDU>> syms x y

f = 1/sqrt(x);

laplace(f, x, y)

Undefined function 'syms' for input arguments of type 'char'.

Hilary, you probaby do not have the Symbolic Math Toolbox installed and/or licensed. At the MATLAB command prompt type

 which -all syms

and you will get a file path in return, if the toolbox is installed. In this case the licensing is the issue.
