Matlab how to find the list of available built-in functions

I am learning Matlab with Simulink, and find I have been creating functions that already exist. How so find a list of the built-in functions available?

The FEX site is impressive. Unfortunately, my question is much more naive. I am looking for a listing of the built-in functions of Matlab. I haven't even been able to find a listing of the statistical functions that I know from Excel. This answer is a help, but I hope for another suggestion. Thanks, Ed

I was reading some help window on Matlab and encounter a comment that I should check the f-sub x letters that were part of the Command Window prompt. It was such a small item that I had just ignored it. I found it listed all the functions in a manner that answered my questions. I am happier now. Thanks for the comment, it keep me working on it. I have this question too. In the documentation it says "avoid creating variables with the same name as a function."

But there are so many builtin functions!

You can check if objects already exist using

>> exist j  % Check existence of variable, script, function, folder, or class

ans =

     5
     

It also tells you what type the object is. The number 5 means j is a built-in MATLAB function

Also,

>> isvarname('j')  % Check if s is a valid variable name

ans =

  logical

   1
   

I think this means you can use 'j' as a variable name. But it doesn't seem to check if j is a built-in function.

If you create a variable named gca, gcb, gcs, gcf or gco (to name just a few) you are overriding a builtin function.

Coming from Python with a well-organised namespace, it's astounding how many variable names are not available (or should not be used). Or do most people not worry and simply override functions that they are not using?

Anyone know how many built-in function names there are? I'm curious too.

For any given name, which() can tell you whether it is a built in function.

The function list FEX contribution misses many functions, as the only built-in functions it catalogues are the ones that have help documentation in the form of .m files
