It would be helpful if you provide any screenshot or screen recording where you are facing the issue. I am using MATLAB R2020a as well. But I am not facing this issue.

As per my understanding you are trying to find some button/option named “external mode” which will interface an Arduino board to Simulink. In Simulink there’s no specific “option” named “external mode”. Click on “Build, Start and Deploy” after configuring the Simulink model to be deployed on an Arduino board and that should run the Simulink model on “external mode”. The documentation on “Programming Arduino Uno with Simulink” is given below:
You can also achieve the same by searching “external mode for Arduino” in the Search Bar in toolstrip of Simulink. The steps to execute this method is explained in the given link:
But this method works on version MATLAB R2023a and releases that follow.

All the settings that are kept are correct. Follow the steps listed below:
- Click on Apply, then Ok.
- Then go ahead and save the Simulink file.
- After that just click on Build, Deploy & Start button present in the toolstrip.
I have attached the following image for reference. The Simulink model should start generating code after verifying your model. After code generation, it will be dumped on the Arduino board and the board should function as intended.

Link for reference:
Hope this helps. Feel free to comment if you have any other issues.
