OCR for ALPR question

I'm using build in function ocr in matlab 2014a i try to use it for ALPR.
I have a single sign and it not always find it properly , sam times as a result is empty '' , but when i give to ocr full plate the result it good , how can i fix it??
And a second question is, in example there is sample that recognized text and ignores all non-digit characters is ther a way to recognized only digits and letters. I want to ignore special characters(:'., .....).

particularly this section: "15.3.3.7 Road Signs, Traffic Signs, Objects along the Road, Inspections"
It should have some good algorithms that you can use to pick out your signs better.
