Matlab and Simulink keyboard differ

Hello, just did an install of Matlab 2020a for use with Xilinx Model Composer 2021.2 (with a Simulink license). (also, may not be relevant, but using over VNC on Ubuntu 18.04). If I attempt to name components or use the keyboard in any way, it appears that the keyboard locale is incorrect - but it is perfect in the Matlab editor.

I did try

localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8
