Using the gnuplot CALL function in Matlab

Hello, I'm interested in running a gnuplot script from a Matlab script. However, the complication is that I would like to pass variables (including data file names) to the gnuplot script as well which requires gnuplot's CALL function. For example,
call script.gp "datafile" variable2
I have had success using the SYSTEM function in Matlab to simply run a gnuplot script, but not using the CALL functionality.
Any advice would be appreciated.
