An invalid Activation Key or Serial Number was entered
A File Installation Key was entered instead of an Activation Key
An Activation Key is used to link your MathWorks account to a license that you are not already linked to. A File Installation Key is used for offline installations or if you do not have a MathWorks account. Unless you are trying to link your MathWorks account to a license that it is not already linked to, then you probably don't need an Activation Key.
To verify you have the correct Activation Key, contact your License Administrator(s). If you are the administrator of the license, view the documentation below.
If you see the option to select a license during installation, you do not need to also enter an Activation Key, unless you are trying to link to a new license. You can simply select your license and then "Next".
If you are seeing the screen below with no option other than to enter an Activation Key, then this means your MathWorks account is not tied to any licenses. You either need to purchase a license, obtain a trial license, or contact a License Administrator for a valid Activation Key.
If you purchased MATLAB Student License, then your Activation Key would have been emailed to you. If it was not, then contact sales@mathworks.com or call Mathworks for free installation support.
If you purchased any other kind of MATLAB license then those would use license numbers rather than activation keys.
If you are using an license supplied by an organization, including licenses supplied by universities, then they are responsible for providing you with the necessary keys.
If you purchased your MATLAB from Mathworks, then contact Mathworks Support for installation assistance. The volunteers who answer questions here do not have access to the license database.

Note: today (Monday February 21) is a holiday in the USA.
Your license number or activation key would be provided by your institution if you got MATLAB from your institution. If you purchased MATLAB then your license number or activation key will be emailed to you.

I just received my Arduino Engineering Rev 2 kit which included a license for MathWorks. When I started the installation I was directed to a link for MathWorks R2019a which I installed. After installing it I noticed that the Arduino kit said I was to install R2020b, but I can't link my license to it nor can I upgrade to it from R2019a. I get the following message: The license number or activation key is invalid.
True, the Kit doesn't say what version the license is good for, but the kit says to install R2020b. I have a question into the arduino webite where I bought the kit to explain. A friend of mine bought the same kit several months ago and he got the R2020b license. So, I'm a bit hacked-off about this mess. I don't want to start the projects because the kit says to use R2020b.
My friend with the working MatLab talked me thru getting to the correct webpage which gave me license ID for R2020b, so I was finally able to get that version of MatLab installed.

No. We can't. We don't have your key. Call the Mathworks on the telephone and ask for installation help. You'll talk to a real live person who will help you immediately.
You will need to contact Mathworks Support for free installation assistance. Back in 2009 a different license format was used, but they came close to using up the available keys so they switched formats. Because of that, we can no longer generate keys directly for you, and it is necessary to work with Mathworks to get a work-around.
When you contact Mathworks please have proof of purchase available for any version from R2009b or later. For example you could purchase the Standard (commercial/professional) license for R2020b, and that would entitle you to work with Support to install a license for R2009b.

Start the installer. Sign in to your MATLAB account. Agree the the terms and conditions. Click Next.
The page after that will ask about selecting license. If you have an active license for the version of MATLAB, you can click on it. Otherwise, click on the small circle for "Enter Activation Key", and then in the edit box, type in (or paste in) the activation key. Then click Next to continue with the installation.
Deactivate matlab on the old computer, active it on the new computer.
As your license is not a student or home license, then unless it is a Dedicated Host license, you should be able to install and activate on the new system before deactivating on the old system. Student and home licences have to deactivate on the old system first.

When I install the MATLAB release that is newer than the installation key or when the installation key was obtained more than 24 hours prior to installing MATLAB.
I believe that installation keys are specific to the release.
However, I am not aware of any limit as to how quickly it needs to be installed after obtaining the installation key. I do not often use installation keys, but when I do, it has sometimes been a few days between the time of generating the key and the time I install.
Your license itself might not have expired, but you might be told that your Software Support has expired. If so you can keep using MATLAB
You might have an Individual term license that expired. These are uncommon, but do exist (especially in contexts such as universities where it is possible to get grants to cover specific terms and which will refuse to pay for permanently licensed software.) In such a case, you would have to arrange with Mathworks to renew the license
You might be using a corporate or academic license that is being administered on your behalf, and your individual authentication needs to be renewed against that license. In such a case, you might need to go to Help -> Licensing -> Update Current License if you can start MATLAB; if you cannot start MATLAB then you might need to run the activation client
However, Student licenses are not permitted access (if I understand correctly), and if you are using an institution license (Academic, or your job) then they can control whether you can access downloads or not. Also, even if you have an individual license, you will only have access to that link if you are licensed for R2016b or later.
The key cannot be reset. The key is either valid or it is not valid.
A license could potentially expire, though. Mathworks used to sell 8 month or 1 year Student licenses, but I do not know if they sell those any more. But that would not show up as an error 510.
I WAS USING THE TRAIL VERSION OF MATLAB FOR LONG TIME. THE
ACTIVATION CODE IS 8XXXXXXXXX. THE MATLAB IS NOT WORIKG NOW . HOW TO ACTIVATE NOW. I AM USING FOR PERSONEL RESEARCH. I AM A RETIRD HIGHLY EXPERIENCED (35 YEARS) ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. PLEASE GUIDE ME FOR CONTINUING MY RESEARCH.
Please contact Mathworks Support for free licensing and installation assistance. The volunteers who answer questions here do not have access to the license database.
Note: the number you gave was a license number, not an activation key.
What you entered for an Activation Key did not have the correct format for an Activation Key. For example it might have been a FIle Installation Key, or it might have been mistyped.

No, that is never the case for Error 510. Error 510 only has two causes:
When asked to enter an Activation Key, something that is not the right format for an Activation Key was entered. For example someone might have entered a File Installation Key when asked for an Activation Key; FIK have a different syntax than Activation Key
When asked to enter an Activation Key, something was entered that was the correct format, but was not a valid Activation Key. It might have been a valid Activation Key at one time that was revoked, or it might be something that looks like an Activation Key but which does not meet the internal cross-checks for validity. For example if you made a mistaking in typing an Activation Key, and entered 90195 for a place that was supposed to be 90196 then the internal checksums for validating Activation Keys would fail and it would be rejected.
Activation Keys do not themselves have information about expiry, or at least not in any obvious way. If a mistake had been made somehow on the Mathworks side about date of expiry, then you would not get an error 510 -- you would get a different error, such as Error 10.
