What is role of Mosfet in regenerative mode?

We have a converter and we are using this converter to simulate Regen mode for a Ipmsm motor. During regen, with MOSFET being unidirectional, will the free wheeling diode do all the work? will we still need to give it PWM gate cycles ? and is there a way to control the regen voltage without using Active Short Circuit method?
Is there any link for me to study on this further?
Thank you in advance for answering my questions!

In a regenerative braking scenario with an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor), the motor acts as a generator, converting mechanical energy back into electrical energy.
Although the freewheeling diodes provide a path for reverse current, using PWM control on the MOSFETs can help manage the flow of energy. By controlling the duty cycle of the PWM, you can influence the amount of energy being regenerated and control the current flow more precisely.
One way to control the regen voltage is by regulating the DC bus voltage.
