This particular syntax of generating normally distributed complex number was added in R2022a - https://in.mathworks.com/help/releases/R2022a/matlab/ref/randn.html#mw_ed86de37-4aa2-4eff-b955-109aa0791624
You can try this method instead -
y = rand(5,1) + 1i*rand(5,1)
y =
0.6128 + 0.1289i 0.8724 + 0.4457i 0.3249 + 0.0643i 0.9266 + 0.5437i 0.9903 + 0.1540i
