MATLAB Assingment-Use character arrays to display an input type

Write a function that accepts an input argument that is one of 3 things: a vector, a matrix, or a scalar of values. The function should return an output argument that contains a character array that reads: 'vector', 'scalar', or 'matrix'. Make sure that each of these is all lower case exactly as written or your work will evaluate as incorrect!!! You are not displaying the words vector, scalar, or matrix. You are returning variable y that has a value of vector, scalar, or matrix.

Im very new to coding and am confused how i go about this problem. I started with

function y = findargtype(x)
if  y==ismatrix(x)
    y=char(matrix)
elseif y==isscalar(x)
    y=char(scalar)
elseif y==isvector(x)
    y=char(vector)



end

but it says y is unknown. Any help would be appreciated!

You're on the right track.

y is the result your function needs to determine, so it's not available when the function begins; the only thing the function has available is x, the input.

So instead of this:

if  y==ismatrix(x)

How about this:

if ismatrix(x)

?

That makes a lot of sense and the function is now running but im confused now what should be placed in my y=char()? Would I just put the variables used in the code used to run the function?

In addition to Voss's comment:

• Consider that all scalars are vectors and all vectors are matrices. But in general matrices are not vectors, and in general vectors are not scalars. So you will need to revise the order which you perform those checks (hint: start with the most restrictive, end with the most general).
• This code y=char(matrix) attempts to call a function named MATRIX or refer to a variable named MATRIX.... neither of which is really going to do what want. To define a character array (as your assignment specifies) you just need to use single quotes, e.g. y = 'this is text';

And to create the character array to return, just use single quotation marks like the first segment of code in the Represent Text with Character Vectors section on that documentation page. This was the first hit when I searched the documentation for the phrase "character array".
