If I deactivate my llicense on one computer to try Matlab on my new computer, can I reactivate the old computer Matlab if the new computer Matlab does not work?

I am slow and error prone at changing paths and code -- if I cannot get the code from the old computer to work on the new computer, I want to be able to back to the old computer where it all works perfectly.

Well, yes. You can go back, even though we learned long ago that "You can't go home again", Thomas Wolfe may have fed us a little literary lie. ;-)
Again, yes, you can go back. But you also can go forwards too. There will be generally no problems in the path forwards. MathWorks always makes a great deal of effort to insure forward compatibility from one release to the next. I have upgraded MATLAB probably dozens of times, and used MATLAB on perhaps 8-10 different computers. I'm losing count over alll these years. But I've never had a problem in the process. Never.
I'd suggest you want to give yourself an easy out, so that you don't need to make the new computer work. Just don't give up at the slightest burp in the process.
Make sure you move ALL of your files in your search path to the new machine. Then add those directories to the search path, and save it. This will take probably all of a few minutes. Then in the new MATLAB, spend a little time making sure the preferences are as you wish. Again, 5 minutes.

Yes, you can deactivate on the new machine and re-activate on the original machine. However, each cycle will "use up" one transfer, and there is small limit (about 4) on the number of times you can transfer your license during one year.
What I would suggest is using a Trial license on the new machine to see whether you can get the code working there, and not transfer licenses until you have it working.
